Initially formed in 2006, Caldo de Cabeza from Concepción, Chile, played some shows before calling it quits after a year. Reforming in 2012 with a new lineup, the band began unleashing their fierce brand of antifascist grindcore onto the world. After two excellent EPs and a split with fellow countrymen Ayakara, they self-released their longest and most distinguished work to date on September 28, 2023—their third 20-song EP, Basura Humana.

Caldo de Cabeza strongly embraces a militantly political form of grindcore, closely aligning in themes and tone with crustgrind and mince bands like Disrupt, Destroy!, Warsore, Suffering Mind, and Disturbance Project. The band’s ultimate conception is staunchly anarchist, expressed throughout their artwork, lyrics, and unrelenting sound. They explore topics such as feminism from a Global South perspective, racism as a consequence of brutal colonization, animal rights, nihilism, and the unending battle against an ever-increasing fascist threat. The looming memory of Pinochet’s dictatorship remains in Chile today through groups like the neo-Nazi ultranationalist Social Patriot Movement. However, the country’s antifascist movement and bands like Caldo de Cabeza take a strong stance against them and, united under the black flag, never stop fighting.

They address a vast array of issues in their music, and the quality and nature of their vicious auditory panorama boldly express their ideas about the world. On Basura Humana, the production is as good as it gets for this genre, providing the band with the space needed to fully reach their potential. Vocalist Pablo, the only original member since 2006, delivers excruciatingly high shrieks and demonic low growls, shifting between the two effortlessly. Guitarist Alvaro maintains a high-energy riff assault that occasionally slows down to deliver groovier crust punk segments, at times bordering on sludge. All of this is backed by a feral rhythm section of distorted bass lines and maniacal drumming. The record is very fast-paced and is made compelling by the band’s technical proficiency and the never-ending stream of catchy ideas they present. The crusty Disrupt-like moments and constant tempo changes evoke other legends like Insect Warfare, making Basura Humana a perfect blend of crustgrind and barbaric political mincecore.

The dark, apocalyptic artwork is a flawless representation of Caldo de Cabeza’s nihilistic anarchist ideas, which in this EP tackle on humanity’s inherent flaws and the all-consuming decadence of modern civilization. They address issues such as the endless exploitation of nature and animals, industrial colonization, and a critique of blind faith in the scientific method. The band suggests that mankind’s relentless profit-driven incentives, justified ideologically by the global neoliberal system and its false ideas of progress, lead to widespread destruction and degradation.

This is what the band fights against with this excellent piece of raw, old-school grindcore EP appropriately named Basura Humana—Human Waste. Songs like “Epidemia de una Sociedad Moderna”, “Falso Progreso”, “Tecnologicodependientes”, the title track, and the crushing “Suicidados” are a testament to the band’s outlook on the current state of the world. With “Nefasta Salud Pública” and “Chovinismo”, they take a strong stance against the modern democratic state’s inability to provide adequate healthcare and the rise of chauvinistic and fascist ideas, which increase as a result of neoliberal doctrine. The uncompromising sound of the record captures an intense opposition to systemic racism, fascism, and modern capitalism. Even though the prevalent atmosphere is pessimistic, there is a strong sentiment of a never-ending, burning resistance against all of this.

Basura Humana is an ominous reflection of postmodern reality, providing everything that makes true grindcore great with its distinct socio-political context and heavy crust punk undertones. If you’re into antifascist old-school crust/grind/mince, this release will not disappoint you. This is for all who still believe this genre is a vehicle for protest and reject the commercialized metal bands that call themselves grind.

NOISE NOT MUSIC, GRINDCORE IS PROTEST! Ⓐ
